Big Blue Conservation - Koh Tao - Thailand

PADI Coral Watch

Developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, Coral Watch is a coral health monitoring protocol used to evaluate coral bleaching. Using the standardised CoralWatch colour chart, we can monitor the change in colour intensity of the corals, which has a direct relationship to its health.

Eco Objective

Coral reefs are in danger of disappearing due to temperature induced bleaching in the next 30-50 years. In 1998, the sea temperature was the hottest it has been for 450,000 years, resulting in 60% of the worlds coral to bleach. When corals bleach, they are severely stressed, and so much more susceptible to disease and death. To monitor the frequency and intensity of bleaching events and thus to potentially help prevent mass coral death from future bleaching events, CoralWatch monitoring is essential.
