Because of the slow growth rate of corals, we must do what we can to preserve them. Ultimately we aim to have as little impact on the reef when doing any conservation work or other diving/snorkeling expeditions. Our impact can be easily minimized by avoiding anchoring on the reef, which is a careless and detrimental act that mainly comes from a lack of available alternatives. So here on Koh Tao, we are lucky enough to have a community initiative that forbids anchoring on the reefs around the island. We work together to maintain permanent moorings at our local dives sites and all bays within 3 km of Koh Tao. Big Blue Conservation has for years worked alongside other schools, the Thai Navy, and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) in establishing and maintaining moorings around the island. During our 1-month internship program, you will learn the knots and techniques you will need in order to help us look after the moorings, and in some cases be a part of establishing completely new mooring lines.
